Knit a Donkey

I just love this one - Knit a Donkey - for the Donkey Sanctuary.

Everyone is asked to help with this - if you can knit just drop into this link to help the Sanctuary.  They help these wonderful little animals to survive and live a nice life.  So many of them are badly treated often just from lack of knowledge.  Please check it out at the Donkey Sanctuary link below.

Knit a Donkey - or ask your Mum or your Gran to knit one.

Feeding Code of Conduct

BETA have introduced a code of practice - albeit a voluntary one - for feed manufacturers.

The new code has been introduced to reduce risk of Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances in feed.  The code was implemented on 1 October 2009.  A number of manufacturers are commited to the code including the following:  Baileys, Blue Chip, British Horse Feeds, Dodson & Horrell, Natural Animal Feeds, Red Mills, Saracen, Spillers, TopSpec  and Dengie (subject to FEMAS approval).

It is called The Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS),Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NOPS) Code.  It was developed by BETA in conjunction with assurance scheme experts as a result of the increasing amount of incidence where positive dope tests have been prevalent showing morphine, in racehorses.

Snow, Ice & Frozen Water

Plenty of areas in the UK have had some pretty poor weather over the last month. One of the things horse owners often struggle with is providing enough water.

If you find your horses has water buckets which are frozen in the morning you absolutely MUST provide them with two full buckets as soon as you arrive.  They need just as much water in the bad snowy icy weather as they do at other times of year.

Horses drink betwen 6 and 10 GALLONS of water a day - now that is a lot of water.  Do YOU know how much your water bucket holds?  If not go straight away and check it out.  Make sure you are providing enough water.

A horses body is made up of 50% water.  They need water for lots of things to help their body work and function properly.  They need water to enable their food to be digested properly and for the body to remove the nutrients from the food.  They can survive for longer without food than water.  No water for some days of course means certain death.

Canadian Horse keepers

This news piece is from Catherine Humphrey a student who has recently moved to Ontario, Canada. We hope soon to hear from her again with news on how the move itself went.   Thanks Catherine for your input, it is good to know how things work in other countries.

Keeping Horses In The Canadian Climate.

When I first arrived in Canada, I realised that keeping horses here does not vary greatly from keeping horses in the UK. The same discussions and diverse opinions are held on most horsey issues, however I have found a few fundamental differences.
