Work Experience

For young horse mad people, who want to work with horses, going away to college is not always the right option.

Here at Lingfield we have several suggestions and are happy to chat and discuss with parents the various routes to training and working in the horse world in the UK.

Sometimes the horse mad youngsters – or their parents – aren’t even sure that working with horses is really what they want.  How about trying Work Experience first to get a taste of what it is really like to work in the industry.  We suggest that to get a guine work experience that you find somewhere you have not worked or helped previously.  Moving away from that ‘comfortable’ place where you know the people you are working with, the horses and the employer, is more realistic workplace environment.

If you do look into work experience it is vital to be sure that the place you choose is the right place, and genuinely gives the experience you are looking for.  We are happy to chat and discuss your possible or chosen placement to help you decide if it is likely to provide the experienced required.

Perhaps living as part of a family for a spell might be the way to go – maybe even at a competition yard overseas – maybe you could consider this, perhaps but in the future.

Perhaps working overseas at a Summer Camp appeals – perhaps not this year but in future.

‘Equipeople’ in Ireland tells us on their website that itis  a good home stay option and by the look of it you can go check it out first.  Equipeople has been placing young Europeans in equine and agricultural work experience placements throughout Ireland since 2003.  http://www.equipeopleworkexperience.com/

We may have more information in the office – feel free to contact Paula Clements on lingfieldcourses@horse-care.uk In the meantime perhaps an equine management course would help get some of the professional theory knowledge under your belt : Lingfield courses offer Equine Care & Management  Level 1 Plus

All under 16’s enrolled on our courses must have a responsible adult to oversee their entire course and to handle all communications between the student and the course office. Then there is the Intermediate Diploma for those with a little more maturity.
