An ABRS success story – The Responsible Groom course. Work placement:  Student ‘Anna’. Quarry Farm in Lamberton – situated between Eyemouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

As a riding school this yard (Eat Sleep Ride CIC) offers regular short term work placements for people struggling to keep their life on track. The owner Danielle Mckinnon and her managers are aware that all their ‘staff’ need support from the yard during this ABRS certificated Responsible Groom course. They do not simply enrol them on the Lingfield course and leave them to get on with it.  They offer to print course material for their staff member if necessary. Most our Lingfield students work from the printed page – it is one of the reasons these courses are so popular – you can work online or on paper. The employer talks them through how to get started This is vital for many yard workers because most do not ‘take to’ course work and IT so readily via computers.  Many employers are unaware of this!

If necessary Quarry Farm offer to loan a computer on site during quiet times at the yard, which in this case has proved to be successful for the student we will call ‘Anna’. Result:

This particular course helped ‘Anna’, to achieve a personal goal and gain confidence in her abilities. She has a better understanding of her employers obligations and requirements at work and of work situations.  Anna is now much more aware of her responsibilities at work both towards her employer, her colleagues and in any future employment situations.

Anna achieved a very successful pass! Unless the proprietor tells us a little about their staff member, we are simply dealing with a name on a list.  Fortunately, this yard reached out to us and the result exceeded expectatons. Lingfield comment:

This co-ordinated support via the yard and our Lingfield tutor was really worthwhile.  A responsible supportive employer always results in a successful outcome for their workforce which ultimately directly affects the yard.

“This yard helped us enormously by explaining their staff member’s circumstances in a quick email.  They explained how this student would work on the Responsible Groom course.  They told us whether it would be – at the yard on a work computer – with help from an0ther senior IT lit staff member – if the student would work at home – or, as in this case a combination of all three.

From the information the yard provided we were able to discuss with them what initial support the student might need from the proprietor, and how we could support the yard and the student throughout the course.”

It is important to remember that we are a handfull of riding instructors/ coaches/tutors here at Lingfield.  We are not a huge impersonal and nameless training organisation.  We work on a one to one basis with the yard and the student.

Even after enrolment, we know nothing about the person enrolled on a course.  We have no idea what sort of yard it is, what sort of work the yard and staff member undertake or their individual circumstances. We have only names on paper unless the proprietor drops us a quick personal email to tell us more.

When a proprietor purchases a course, it helps them, us and their staff member if they drop us a quick email to tell us about their employee and ask how they should support this student with their course.  When the employer, provides a little information (like Danielle McKinnon has done), it makes a huge difference to the outcome for their staff member.
